The Central Government has reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing the working conditions of loco running crew, spotlighting the essential role that loco pilots play in the safe and efficient movement of both passengers and goods on Indian Railways. These pilots are vital components of the Indian Railway family.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw specified that loco pilots fall under the continuous category, with duty hours capped at 52 hours every two weeks, as per the Railway Act of 1989 and the HOER guidelines of 2005. They also receive compensation for extra hours worked.

The government ensures loco pilots receive amenities like subsidised meals and RO-filtered water. Since 2014, 7,286 ergonomic three-phase locos have been produced, compared to 719 prior to 2014, and over 7,000 new locos have air-conditioned cabs. Technological aids like Vigilance Control Devices and GPS-based Fog Safe Devices further support loco pilots' safety and efficiency.

Simulator-based training has been ramped up to improve driving skills and reaction times. A mobile app, 'Chalak Dal,' allows crew to access necessary job-related information digitally. Regular safety drives, seminars, and counseling sessions further boost the morale and safety awareness of running staff, underlining the government's comprehensive approach to crew welfare.
