Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva launched a global campaign on Wednesday to eradicate hunger and extreme poverty, positioning it as a key initiative of Brazil's G20 presidency. Speaking alongside foreign officials in Rio de Janeiro, Lula emphasized the urgency of addressing hunger, calling it 'the most degrading of human deprivations' and 'an assault on freedom.'

Lula announced that the official launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty would take place in November at the G20 Summit. This new initiative aims to pool resources, knowledge, and partnerships from around the world to combat malnutrition, with an expectation of drawing participation from over 100 countries.

The event garnered international support, including endorsements from World Bank President Ajay Banga and Inter-American Development Bank head Ilan Goldfajn. The alliance will be bolstered by loans against IMF Special Drawing Rights, following the IMF's approval to enhance lending capacity in May.
