Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva spearheaded a global initiative on Wednesday aimed at eradicating hunger and extreme poverty, marking it as a significant goal for Brazil's G20 presidency. This effort seeks to rejuvenate Brazil's influence on the global stage.

During a gathering in Rio de Janeiro with foreign officials, where finance and development ministers from leading economies were in attendance, Lula introduced the nascent Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. He emphasized the irrationality of persistent hunger and poverty in an era of scientific and technological wealth.

As the initiative prepares for its official launch in November at the G20 Summit, it aims to attract participation from over 100 countries, pooling resources and partnerships. The announcement was backed by World Bank President Ajay Banga, and the Inter-American Development Bank, along with the African Development Bank, committed their support through loans backed by IMF Special Drawing Rights.
