In a shocking revelation, an activist from Pune has alleged that doctors at the state-run Sassoon General Hospital in Pune are abandoning destitute patients at night instead of providing them with necessary medical treatment. This disturbing practice has been exposed by Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi activist Ritesh Gaikwad and social activist Dadasaheb Gaikwad.

Recently, a doctor and his colleague allegedly abandoned a destitute patient named Nilesh, a 32-year-old from Madhya Pradesh, on a road several kilometres away from the hospital. Nilesh had lost both legs after a bus accident and was admitted for treatment on June 16. On Monday midnight, he was taken out of the hospital and left to fend for himself. Following a complaint by social workers, Pune police have registered a case against the doctor under section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to acts endangering life or personal safety of others.

The dean of Sassoon Hospital, Dr. Eknath Pawar, stated that an inquiry has been initiated, and the doctors involved have been suspended. Dr. Pawar mentioned, "The patient was undergoing treatment at the orthopaedic department and had surgery on June 27. Two days ago, I was informed that the patient had gone absconding from the hospital." This incident is the latest in a series of mismanagement and malpractice cases at Sassoon Hospital, raising concerns about patient care and safety. Activists Ritesh Gaikwad and Dadasaheb Gaikwad are calling for actions against the erring doctor and improvements in hospital management.
