In alignment with the Government of India's green initiative and the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Indian Navy and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) have taken a significant step towards sustainable development and environmental stewardship. This collaboration has resulted in the handover of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus by IOCL to the Indian Navy for trials and performance testing.
By harnessing hydrogen as a clean fuel, the Indian Navy is leading the charge towards adopting sustainable transportation within the Armed Forces. The hydrogen-powered bus unveiled today represents the collective efforts of IOCL and the Indian Navy to reduce carbon footprint, improve air quality, and achieve national environmental goals.
An MOU has been signed between IOCL and the Indian Navy, wherein IOCL has committed to providing the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus to the Indian Navy for operational trials. The MOU was signed by Vice Admiral Deepak Kapoor, Controller of Logistics for the Indian Navy, and Dr. Kannan Chandrasekaran, Executive Director of IOCL, in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, and Mr. Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of IOCL.
The operation of the bus by the Indian Navy will facilitate a comprehensive study regarding the performance, durability, and operational reliability of Fuel Cell Buses for public transit applications. The handover of this hydrogen-powered bus symbolizes a commitment to embracing innovative solutions that address the pressing challenges of climate change and energy security.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in the Navy's journey towards sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation, reflecting a broader commitment to achieving India's green energy objectives.
