Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is poised to create history by presenting her seventh consecutive Budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 on Tuesday, surpassing the previous record of former Prime Minister Morarji Desai.
At 65, Sitharaman, appointed as India's first full-time woman finance minister in 2019, has presented six budgets since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decisive second term. Her seventh presentation will surpass Desai's record, who delivered five full budgets and one interim budget between 1959 and 1964.
This year's circumstances necessitated an interim budget in February, followed by a full one this month, as an incumbent government cannot present a full Budget just before general elections. This presentation on July 23 will be the first by the re-elected BJP-led NDA government.
