The Directorate of School Education in Puducherry has announced the closure of all schools on Wednesday, July 17, in observance of Muharram. The directive underscores the importance of the day for Shia Muslims.

Muharram is a key religious event for Shia Muslims, who, along with other communities, partake in large processions and tazias across India. The 7-8 crore strong Shia Muslim community plays a central role in these observances.

In a bid to ensure smooth conduct of the processions, the All India Shia Personal Law Board has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a letter sent in June, the board urged the Prime Minister to bolster security measures on the designated routes to prevent any disruption to law and order.
