Former Prosecutor Anne Brorhilker Takes on Financial Lobbyists to Recover Billions

Anne Brorhilker, the top German prosecutor who spearheaded efforts against a massive tax fraud scheme, pledged on Tuesday to fight the influence of financial lobbyists in her new role as an activist. She is also committed to recovering 28 billion euros ($31 billion) in lost taxes.

For nearly a decade, Brorhilker was a prominent figure combatting 'cum-ex' trading, illegal schemes during the financial crisis that robbed state coffers of billions. Her relentless work led to several jail sentences and hefty fines. In June, Brorhilker transitioned to Finanzwende, a Berlin-based consumer advocacy group, a move she admits came with personal financial sacrifices but afforded her greater freedom of speech.

In her initial press conference since leaving the Cologne prosecutor's office, Brorhilker pinpointed the 'huge influence of the financial lobby' as a major hurdle in Germany's fight against tax crimes. Despite the finance ministry's claims that combating tax evasion is a high priority, Brorhilker argues that financial lobbyists are adept at blocking effective measures.
