In a severe blow to Muzaffarpur district, floodwaters from the Bagmati River have surged into hundreds of homes across 18 panchayats, leaving thousands of residents stranded and disconnected from block and district headquarters. The rapid rise in water levels has also led to flooding on both sides of the Pipapul area.

The flooding has significantly disrupted local education, with many schools inundated in the affected zones. A school staffer reported that children had to be sent home due to knee-deep water levels, adding that authorities have been notified and decisions will follow based on official guidance.

The situation is particularly dire in the Barri and Basghatta Panchayats, where both homes and local infrastructure are severely impacted. Rapid land erosion along the old embankment of the West Bagmati River from Gangia to Bakuchi Chowk is exacerbating the crisis. Concerned villagers have shared harrowing accounts of cooking in waterlogged conditions, children facing starvation, and fears of snake infestations. Despite the severity, administrative response has been slow, according to residents.

The flood situation has persisted for several days, with villagers struggling to prepare food amidst a submerged environment. Katra Circle Officer Madhumita Kumari confirmed the rising water levels and stated that the district administration is actively monitoring the situation. Efforts have been made to survey the affected panchayats and allocate resources, including the provision of boats.

Water department officials have been tasked with identifying affected residents as the administration remains on high alert. Further instructions involve repairing the eroded dams to prevent additional damage.
