The Delhi High Court has decided to dispose of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking an inquiry into the cycle allowance paid to the officials of the Delhi Police. The court directed Delhi Police to place the petition before its auditor, who shall examine the matter during the audit of Delhi Police accounts.
The bench of Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, in an order passed on July 9, stated that it would not be proper to entertain a public interest litigation on the issue raised by the petitioner. Accordingly, the court disposed of the present writ petition with a clear directive to the Delhi Police.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court had been informed that Delhi Police Constables and Head Constables receive Rs 180 per month as a cycle allowance. However, they reportedly spend much more on transport as they primarily use motorcycles or scooters. The Predecessor Bench had previously asked the Delhi Police to revise its circular, noting that the sanctioned amount was insufficient.
The plea, brought by practising advocate Sanser Pal Singh, alleged that police officials fraudulently draw cycle maintenance allowances despite not using bicycles. Despite multiple complaints, no action has been taken against those allegedly misusing the funds.
