Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sudhanshu Trivedi on Monday criticized Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's speech in Parliament, accusing him of insulting Hindu society and undermining the credibility of the UPA governance. Trivedi said that whatever Rahul Gandhi says reflects his mindset.

"Today you are not only insulting the Hindu society but also proving your government a liar. What Rahul Gandhi ji has said has become a trait of the Congress party. He has called the entire Hindu community violent... what he is saying reflects his mentality," Trivedi said. Trivedi also said that a statement was made by former Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in January 2013, who, while serving as Leader of the House, had claimed that the BJP and RSS were involved in violent activities. Shinde later expressed regret for his remarks.

"On 20 January 2013, the then Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, who was also the Leader of the House in the Lok Sabha at that time, had said in Jaipur that violent activities and training camps are being run by the BJP and the RSS and when he was asked a question on the floor of the House, he expressed regret," the BJP MP said. Sushil Kumar Shinde was the Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Power in the Manmohan Singh government, and the Leader of the House in Lok Sabha until 26 May 2014.

He further said that Rahul Gandhi in a similar vein should regret his words on 'Hindu Society'. "So Rahul Gandhi ji, when you were in power, was your Home Minister right or when you are in the opposition, you are right? I think that taking a lesson from Sushil Shinde, at least Rahul Gandhi should express regret over this," Trivedi said.

In his speech, Rahul Gandhi emphasized that BJP, RSS, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi do not represent the entire Hindu community. "Narendra Modi is not the entire Hindu society. BJP is not the entire Hindu society, RSS is not the entire society, this is not BJP's contract," Gandhi said.

"Abhayamudra is the symbol of Congress...The Abhayamudra is the gesture of fearlessness, is the gesture of reassurance and safety, which dispels fear and accords divine protection and bliss in Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism and other Indian religions....All our great men have spoken about non-violence and finishing fear...But, those who call themselves Hindu only talk about violence, hatred, untruth...Aap Hindu ho hi nahi," the Congress leader added. Meanwhile, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw attacked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks in the Lok Sabha and said that the latter has taken up a position of Leader of Opposition for the first time and has made very irresponsible statements thus bringing the level of politics down.

He said that Rahul Gandhi has degraded the position of the Leader of Opposition, which was once handled by prominent leaders. "The position of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) is a highly responsible one. Leaders like Atal Ji, Advani Ji, and Sushma Ji have handled this responsibility with great care. Today, Rahul Gandhi has taken up a position for the first time and has made very irresponsible statements. Rahul said that no compensation is given to the martyrs under the Agniveer scheme. This is the biggest lie. Today, the Defence Minister clearly stated in Parliament that martyrs under the Agniveer scheme receive a compensation of Rs 1 crore. Rahul Ji should check his facts before making such statements. Congress has always raised such questions about the army and tried to mislead the country," Vaishnaw said.

"Rahul Gandhi insulted the constitutional position of the Speaker. This is not the first time; remember when Rahul Gandhi tore up his own government's ordinance. During the UPA government, the constitutional position of the Prime Minister was undermined by the unconstitutional body called the National Advisory Council (NAC), which was run by Sonia Gandhi," he added.
