Union Minister JP Nadda has been appointed the Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha on Monday. Nadda will be replacing Union Minister Piyush Goyal as the Leader of the Upper House.

Nadda assumed charge as Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare on June 11. He is also allocated the portfolio of Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers. He also continues to serve as the BJP's national president.

Nadda served as the Union Health Minister in BJP government from 2014-19. The party contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and several assembly polls under his leadership. He is currently Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat. The 264th Session of Rajya Sabha will commence on June 27 and will conclude on July 3.

Meanwhile, the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha post the general elections 2024 commenced earlier in the day with the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected members including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The session will conclude on July 3. Union Ministers Bhupender Yadav, Giriraj Singh, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, JD(U) MP Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, BJP MP Piyush Goyal, Chirag Paswan, Kiren Rijiju, Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also took oaths as members of the 18th Lok Sabha.

BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab took oath as the pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to him. Mahtub then invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Leader of the Lok Sabha, to take oath as a member of the House. While addressing the media outside the new Parliament building earlier in the day, PM Modi congratulated all the newly elected members and said that the new government will always strive to take everyone along and build consensus to serve the country.
