In a significant step toward sustainable energy, Punjab Power Minister Harbhajan Singh announced on Monday the recommissioning of a 10 MW biomass power plant at Jalkheri, in the Fatehgarh Sahib district. The plant, designed to generate electricity by utilizing 100 percent paddy straw, will consume approximately one lakh tonne of crop residue annually.
This initiative aims to tackle the perennial issue of stubble burning over nearly 50,000 acres of land, offering a greener solution aligned with the government's commitment to energy security, environmental protection, and economic growth. 'This project not only boosts our green energy capacity but also creates employment opportunities,' noted the minister in a statement.
Originally commissioned in June 1992 and re-commissioned multiple times over the years, the upgraded plant, now utilizing advanced Denmark technology boilers, officially began operations on June 21. Over a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) term, the plant will be transferred to Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd, generating power at a cost-effective tariff rate.
