Himachal Pradesh is poised to become the nation's first green energy state, according to an announcement made by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday.

The Chief Minister inaugurated the 32 MW Pekhubela solar power project in Una district, which covers 49 hectares and has been constructed at a cost of Rs 220 crore. The state government has set an ambitious target for the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) to install a 500 MW solar power capacity plant in the region. Sukhu noted that HPPCL has already commenced work on three solar projects totalling 47 MW, with one project already completed.

The project, which began power generation on April 15 and was formally inaugurated today, is expected to generate 6.61 crore units of electricity annually and contribute Rs 19.17 crore in revenue to the state at a rate of Rs 2.90 per unit.

Equipped with 82,656 solar modules, the project transmits electricity via the Rakkad-Tahliwal transmission line and aims to reduce carbon emissions by 2,532 tonnes annually.

Additionally, the HP government has invited tenders for seven more solar projects totalling 72 MW and is preparing project reports for another 54 MW in capacity. Pre-feasibility reports for ten solar projects with a cumulative capacity of 77 MW are also underway.
