The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has embarked on a transformative initiative aimed at bolstering road safety across the country's extensive network of National Highways. To achieve this goal, NHAI has forged a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (IIIT Delhi), a premier technical university established by the Government of National Capital Territory (NCT).

Under the terms of the agreement, IIIT Delhi will spearhead surveys to gather comprehensive data and imagery pertaining to the availability and condition of road signs along selected stretches of National Highways, covering an estimated length of approximately 25,000 kilometers. Leveraging state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, IIIT Delhi will process the collected data to accurately identify and classify road signs. The resulting survey report will include a geo-stamped inventory detailing the categorization of existing road signs, their structural condition, and other pertinent ancillary information.

Additionally, IIIT Delhi will conduct a gap analysis to assess the variance between the observed road sign landscape and the requirements stipulated in the approved road signages plan under respective contract agreements. This analysis will extend to incorporate the latest Codal Provisions pertinent to high-speed corridors, thereby enhancing safety measures in alignment with contemporary standards.

NHAI's adoption of AI and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) represents a pivotal step towards revolutionizing road safety practices on National Highways. By integrating advanced technologies and fostering innovation, NHAI aims to ensure heightened safety standards for all users of the National Highway network, thereby reinforcing its commitment to public safety and infrastructure excellence.
