Kangana Ranaut’s Film Clarifies Its Source of Inspiration Amid Legal Dispute

Manikarnika Films clarified that their film 'Emergency' is inspired, not based, on Coomi Kapoor’s book about India's Emergency. Kapoor had claimed the film breached her book's intellectual property rights. The clarification is part of a legal settlement with Kapoor, Manikarnika Films, and Netflix under Delhi High Court's mediation.

The producers of the controversial film 'Emergency' have clarified that the movie is inspired, but not directly based on, Coomi Kapoor's book 'The Emergency: A Personal History'. The announcement followed a legal complaint by Kapoor claiming a breach of intellectual property rights.

Kapoor, backed by Penguin, had taken legal action in April, asserting the filmmakers inaccurately portrayed historical events from her publication. In response, Akshat Ranaut, from Manikarnika Films, issued a public notice correcting prior credits that linked the film to Kapoor's work.

This clarification comes as a result of a settlement mediated by the Delhi High Court, which also saw rights to Kapoor's book terminated for Manikarnika Films. The case was officially closed, although specific terms of the agreement remain undisclosed.
