Ladakh was struck by the tragic news of a local leader's unexpected death, as Stenzin Dorjay, a general council member of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, was found deceased at his home. The president of the association, Chering Dorjay Lakruk, confirmed that Stenzin Dorjay died by suicide this week.
According to Dorjay's family, he was deeply affected by the recent violence on September 24, which left several individuals dead and many others injured. A committed supporter of the movement for statehood and constitutional safeguards, Dorjay was also an admirer of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose detention appeared to add to his distress.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of Dorjay's death, as no note explaining his actions was discovered. Preliminary reports suggest he consumed a considerable amount of alcohol the night before his demise.
