The internet was recently awash with AI-generated images replicating the distinctive animation style of Studio Ghibli, triggering a heated debate. The controversy began when ChatGPT's latest update introduced a feature that allows users to create images mimicking the hand-drawn artistry synonymous with films by revered Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki.
Many fans and social media users accused the technology of trivializing Miyazaki's work, characterizing the AI as a plagiaristic encroachment on the filmmaker's artistic domain. Zelda Williams, daughter of the late comedian Robin Williams, voiced strong opposition, urging fans to appreciate Miyazaki's genuine art instead of relying on AI-generated imitations.
Despite the backlash, the trend found traction with Indian studios like Dharma Productions and Maddock Films, which shared AI-modified posters of their movies. While some praised the creative novelty, others vehemently contested the ethics of using AI for artistic replication. As yet, Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli have not made any official comments on the matter.
