The Tamil Nadu government has announced an ambitious plan to plant one crore tree saplings across the state, aiming to combat global warming and improve green coverage. This environmental effort was highlighted by State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister, I Periyasamy, during an assembly session on Wednesday.
Part of the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, the saplings are set to be planted on government land, industrial sites, and along highways. In addition to this green initiative, the state plans to dig new tanks and ponds to enhance water resources and recharge groundwater levels, with a substantial allocation of Rs 500 crore.
Further announcements included the construction of compound walls for 500 rural government schools, and the establishment of 1,500 community health complexes near schools and libraries, totaling an additional investment of Rs 81.5 crore. Meanwhile, political discourse saw former AIADMK Minister Kadambur Raju critique the current administration, signaling potential future electoral challenges.
