The Netflix drama 'Adolescence' has shattered records by becoming the first streaming series to lead the UK's weekly TV ratings, as per a report by Variety. Data from the Broadcasters Audience Research Board (BARB) revealed that the show managed to outperform popular traditional TV programs like 'The Apprentice' and 'Death in Paradise'.
In its debut week, the first episode of 'Adolescence' captivated 6.45 million viewers, surpassing the previous UK streaming record of 6.3 million, set by Netflix's 'Fool Me Once' in January 2024. 'Adolescence', a British crime drama miniseries, was created by the talents of Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, with direction by Philip Barantini.
The four-part series explores the arrest of a 13-year-old schoolboy, Jamie Miller, portrayed by Owen Cooper, who stands accused of murdering a female classmate. Notably, each episode is filmed in a single, continuous take, a technique that elevates the show's storytelling. Co-creator Graham also stars in the series, playing Jamie's father, Eddie Miller.
Premiering on Netflix on March 13, the series has earned widespread critical praise for its writing, direction, and performances. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has even commended the series, sharing that he watched it with his own teenage children and supports its viewing in Parliament and schools. (ANI)
