Joseph Mor Gregorious Ascends as New Catholicos of Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church

Joseph Mor Gregorious has been appointed as the new Catholicos of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church in India, following a ceremony in Lebanon. He succeeds the late Baselious Thomas I. The event featured prominent church leaders and Indian government representatives, underscoring the religious ceremony's significance.

In a significant religious event, Joseph Mor Gregorious has been elevated to the position of Catholicos in the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church in India. The appointment ceremony took place at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday evening.

The newly appointed Catholicos, who will be known as Baselios Joseph, takes over from the late Baselious Thomas I, who passed away last October. The ceremonial proceedings were led by Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East.

The event was attended by leaders of various Christian denominations, as well as Indian governmental delegations, highlighting its international and cultural significance. The Catholicos now serves as the second-highest authority in the Church, following the Patriarch.
