In the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor sounded the alarm on illegal fishing practices in Kerala's territorial waters, calling for immediate government intervention. Despite prohibitions, methods like bull trawling and LED light usage continue, wreaking havoc on marine life and local fishermen.
Highlighting the severity of the issue during the Zero Hour session, Tharoor stressed that the continuation of these harmful methods by outsiders in Kerala waters is depleting fish resources and threatening traditional fisherfolk's livelihoods. He emphasized the need to protect these communities from assaults by unlawful fishing activities.
Tharoor urged the Minister of Fisheries to actively involve the Coast Guard and the Indian Navy to enforce the prohibition more stringently. He noted that these practices not only undermine India's Blue Economy and Maritime Vision 2030 but also violate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
