In an exciting development for fans of the Harry Potter franchise, acclaimed actor John Lithgow, 79, has been cast to play the legendary wizard Albus Dumbledore in HBO's forthcoming television adaptation of the iconic book series. Lithgow, known for his versatile roles, expressed confidence, telling hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett that he doesn't view the part as particularly challenging, according to a People magazine report.
Despite being new to J.K. Rowling's magical world, Lithgow shared that he is currently making his way through the book series and is midway through the second novel. HBO announced in April 2023 that this ambitious project will dedicate an entire season to each of the beloved books, according to the same source.
As for filming logistics, Lithgow admitted uncertainty about his schedule once the production begins this summer. Drawing parallels to his previous experience filming in England for 'The Crown', he anticipates a more flexible schedule allowing him to return to the U.S. more frequently. Lithgow described his role as Dumbledore as pivotal yet not especially demanding, as the character surfaces only at critical moments. So far, Lithgow is the only confirmed cast member, although there are rumors that British actor Paapa Essiedu might assume the role of Severus Snape.
