Robert Downey Jr. stunned audiences at the San Diego Comic-Con by stepping into the persona of Doctor Doom, a role that initially shocked fans who know him as the heroic Tony Stark. According to Deadline, discussions about Downey playing Victor Von Doom trace back to before his casting in Iron Man.

Director Jon Favreau, in conversation with Marvel president Kevin Feige, revealed that Downey was considered for Doctor Doom, possibly around the time of 2005's Fantastic Four. The role eventually went to Julian McMahon, but Downey left a lasting impression, leading to his acclaimed portrayal of Stark in Iron Man.

Despite initial resistance, Downey has pitched the idea of joining Avengers: Secret Wars and Avengers: Doomsday. The directors initially declined due to a lack of story, but collaborator Steve McFeely presented a compelling concept that changed their minds. Joe, one of the directors, hinted at crafting a complex villain, suggesting Downey's potential in bringing depth to the character, reported Deadline.
