The Maharashtra legislative assembly unanimously passed a resolution on Monday urging the Centre to award the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, posthumously to Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule. These social reformers significantly advanced women's education by establishing the first girls' school in Pune.
The motion was introduced by Minister Jaykumar Raval and supported by NCP MLA Chhagan Bhujbal and Congress's Vijay Wadetiwar. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the recognition of the 'Mahatma' title, already bestowed upon Phule, stating that receiving the Bharat Ratna would be a state recognition of their monumental contributions.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar expressed delight at the resolution's passing, emphasizing its role in honoring public sentiment and enhancing the award's prestige.
