Japan's iconic cherry blossom season has officially started, marked by the first blooms in Tokyo, as confirmed by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The official declaration signals the beginning of a cherished festive period, celebrated nationwide.
This year, blooms were first observed at Tokyo's Yasukuni shrine in the Somei Yoshino variety, where more than the required five blossoms were in bloom. This aligns with the average yearly schedule but comes five days earlier than the previous year.
The early flowering, linked to warmer temperatures, continues to stir discussions on climate change's impact. Cherry blossoms, or 'sakura,' deeply rooted in Japan's cultural and literary traditions, reflect the nation's sensitivity to environmental shifts.
