At a conclave organized by the CSIR-NIIST, key figures stressed the importance of innovative technologies for achieving sustainable packaging goals. Former Vice-Chancellor of the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, Prof G D Yadav, asserted that merely banning plastics is insufficient and called for new technological solutions.
Yadav highlighted the critical role of chemical recycling alongside the principles of 'Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce.' He advocated for additional practices like 'Refuse' and 'Repurpose' to minimize carbon footprints, noting India's significant CO2 emissions and the necessity of reducing them by 2050.
Meanwhile, CSIR-NIIST Director Dr C Anandharamakrishnan and IIP Director Rajesh Kumar Mishra underscored the need for comprehensive approaches and consumer responsibility. The event also spotlighted India's potential to lead global sustainable packaging efforts through research and institutional collaboration.
