A tragic fire swept through the Liguang market in Zhangjiakou, northern China, on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of eight people and injuries to 15 others, according to state media reports. The blaze broke out at midday and was mostly contained by 2:00 PM, said officials from the Qiaoxi District.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, with possibilities ranging from gas bottles and charcoal typically used in traditional markets to discarded cigarettes. These markets are known for their tightly packed stalls and shoppers, often seeking lower prices than supermarket chains.
Zhangjiakou, located near Beijing in Hebei province, gained international attention for hosting events during the 2022 Winter Olympics. The fire has raised questions about the safety of aging infrastructure, such as underground gas lines, in such traditional market areas.
