The traditional maritime festival known as Boita Bandana, or Danga Bhasa, unfolds each year during Kartik Purnima in Odisha, marking a day when the skies echo with the spirit of the past. This festival, held during the full moon in the holy month of Kartik, is celebrated through the floating of intricately crafted miniature boats.

Falling in October or November, Boita Bandana commemorates Odisha's ancient maritime activities and flourishing trade relations with Southeast Asian countries. The festival witnessing eager participation, sees locals preparing exquisitely crafted miniature boats, embodying the deep-rooted cultural heritage of the region.

Artisans in Bhadrak are at the heart of these preparations, crafting beautifully decorated miniature boats. One artisan expressed to ANI the heritage and craftsmanship involved in maintaining this tradition, stating a concern over diminished demand compared to previous years. He emphasized the importance of supporting these local handmade vessels over imported Chinese alternatives. These miniature boats, made from banana stems, paper, and colored cloth, are a nod to Odisha's rich maritime history and honor the intrepid sailors who once braved the seas.

Rooted in historical prominence, the festival honors Odisha as a former major maritime power. On Kartik Purnima, the set afloat of boats adorned with lamps, flowers, and prasad is not merely a ceremonious act but a heartfelt tribute to the sea deity Varuna. This tradition also narrates tales of resilience and adventure, recalling merchants voyaging to trade with distant lands such as Java, Sumatra, Bali, and Indonesia. Boita Bandana reflects the present generation's effort to connect with and respect this seafaring legacy.

The atmosphere reverberates with nostalgia and homage to the ancestors who crafted Odisha's maritime heritage. While retaining its traditional essence, Boita Bandana also encapsulates a cultural and social facet, engaging communities through vibrant cultural events, fairs, and processions.

Beyond the rituals, the festival reiterates Odisha's historical maritime connections, fostering cultural pride and unity among its people. (ANI)
