Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has withdrawn his latest children's book due to controversy over its portrayal of Australia's Indigenous community. "Billy and the Epic Escape," published in May, was criticized for negatively stereotyping Indigenous Australians and mishandling their languages.
Oliver apologized, stating, "I am devastated to have caused offence and apologise wholeheartedly." The book was pulled from sale following criticism from community leaders, including Sue-Anne Hunter, who described the work as "insensitive."
Australia's Indigenous groups, among the world's oldest cultures, continue to face misrepresentation. Historically, they have suffered grave injustices, exemplified by the "Stolen Generation" policy that forcibly removed children from their families.
