British Hindus have expressed concern over the menu choices at a recent Diwali reception hosted by Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street. The inclusion of non-vegetarian snacks and alcohol has sparked a backlash on social media, where many argue that the event lacked proper cultural consultation.
Insight UK, a community organization, criticized what they described as an "appalling lack of understanding" of Diwali's spiritual significance, which traditionally involves vegetarian meals and abstinence from alcohol. They stressed the need for more dialogue ahead of such religious gatherings to ensure cultural sensitivity.
Downing Street did not comment on the menu but emphasized the event was a cross-community gathering. Prime Minister Starmer's address highlighted the values of togetherness and celebration, following a tradition set by his predecessor, Rishi Sunak. However, some British Hindu groups noted they were not invited to the event.
