In the heart of Panaji, Goa, the festive atmosphere of Diwali comes alive with the traditional burning of the Narakasura effigy. This significant event, observed on Thursday, commemorates the legendary triumph of Lord Krishna over the demon king Narakasura, embodying the eternal theme of good defeating evil.

Narakasura, an infamous Asura king in Hindu mythology, once ruled the land known as Gomantak, now part of Goa. According to local lore, his reign of terror was ended by a fierce battle with Lord Krishna, whose Sudharshan Chakra brought peace and joy back to the people of the region, a victory celebrated annually.

Across India, Diwali is marked by vibrant decorations, festive lights, and community gatherings. In Goa, the tradition of burning the Narakasura effigy involves crafting an intricate figure from wood and grass over a span of two to three weeks. This unique Goan tradition, enduring for over 80 years, enhances the cultural tapestry of Diwali.
