The Chinese government announced on Tuesday that it has reached an agreement with the Vatican to extend a provisional accord on appointing Catholic bishops in China for an additional four years.
Originally signed in 2018, the agreement aimed to bridge long-standing issues regarding control of the church in China under Pope Francis. Despite disputes, the extension marks ongoing efforts to reconcile differences.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian confirmed the decision, noting both sides will continue constructive dialogue to improve relations. The Vatican had severed ties with China over seven decades ago, prompting divided loyalties among the country's 12 million Catholics.
