The demand to grant 'official language' status to Bhojpuri, a widely spoken dialect in Bihar, is gaining traction with the Mahagathbandhan coalition rallying for its recognition in the state.
Senior leaders from the RJD, Congress, and CPI(ML) Liberation, key members of the Mahagathbandhan, have pledged to bring the issue to the Parliament following the Union Cabinet's recent decision to recognize five additional classical languages.
Highlighting Bhojpuri's significant presence in Bihar and parts of Jharkhand, CPI(ML) Liberation's MP Sudama Prasad called out the central government for its silence over including Bhojpuri in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Currently, a total of 22 languages are listed in the schedule, with demands for 38 more, including Bhojpuri, pending consideration.
