Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has mandated that the Kannada flag be hoisted across all educational institutions, businesses, and factories in the state, including the IT and biotechnology sectors, on November 1, Karnataka's formation day. This directive comes as the state celebrates 50 years since being renamed from Mysore to Karnataka.
Shivakumar emphasized the significance of the day for Kannadigas and highlighted the need for non-native residents in Bengaluru to prioritize learning Kannada. The Kannada flag, designed in the 1960s by Veera Senani Ma Ramamurthy, symbolizes Kannada pride and unity. The government's order aims to foster a love for the language among the citizens, especially students.
While cultural programs will be a feature of schools and colleges, Shivakumar clarified that factories and businesses are only required to hoist the flag. He warned that while legal action could be taken against coercion from pro-Kannada groups, he expects voluntary compliance with the government's request.
