In a historic event for Nepal, a Nepali man and a U.S. citizen married, marking the first international same-sex marriage in the country. This union follows a June 2023 Supreme Court interim order legalizing same-sex marriages.
The wedding took place at a local hotel and included Hindu and Christian rituals, symbolizing diverse cultural traditions. It was attended by 50 people, including members of the sexual minority community and diplomats.
The event highlights Nepal's potential as a hub for same-sex weddings, promoting tourism. With their marriage officially registered, Joseph Foster Elis plans to stay in Nepal with his partner, Prajeet Budhathoki.
