The visit underscores Laos' role as the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), founded in 1967. In Lao PDR, Modi was welcomed at the airport by the Minister of Home Affairs and later received a spirited reception from the Indian diaspora.

Modi's itinerary includes participation in the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit, witnessing the Laotian Ramayan performance, and holding discussions on strategic partnerships.
