The tight-knit village of Nowgam in Anantnag plunged into mourning when news of local army jawan Hilal Ahmad Bhat's death surfaced on Wednesday. The grim report detailed how Bhat, kidnapped by terrorists on his return to duty, became an unexpected victim of violence.
Residents, grappling with the loss of a beloved neighbor, aired their grief and called for governmental support for Bhat's surviving family, which includes a young wife, five-year-old son Azaan, and an infant daughter. Bhat's return home for a brief leave was meant to be a joyful reunion. Instead, it ended in sorrow as he was abducted on his way back to service.
Security forces responded with a massive search operation, but hopes were dashed when Bhat's bullet-ridden body was discovered in the dense Sanglan forest. His friends and family, still in shock, remembered him as a kind-hearted individual whose life was cut tragically short by an unspeakable crime.
