The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Wednesday marked the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, committing to continue their legacies for a peaceful and united India.
At the event held at the party headquarters in Jammu, participants laid floral tributes to both leaders in recognition of their contributions to the nation. JKPCC Vice-President Raman Bhalla presided over the event, with senior vice-president and chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma also present.
Bhalla emphasized Gandhi's enduring relevance, stating, "Gandhiji's principles of non-violence and tolerance are as important today as they were during the freedom struggle, especially in a world plagued by violence and conflict." He attributed India's global reputation for democracy and non-violence to Gandhi's ideals, which continue to inspire globally.
Bhalla described Gandhi as a symbol of peace, religious harmony, non-violence, and truth. "His ideology is essential for our country's unity and integrity," Bhalla added, urging supporters to uphold these values amid today's divisive times.
Turning to Lal Bahadur Shastri, Bhalla highlighted his dedication and integrity. "Shastri Ji was a dedicated freedom fighter and a symbol of honesty and national commitment during his prime ministership, especially during the 1965 war," Bhalla said.
Sharma honored Gandhi, noting the sacrifices made by freedom fighters under his leadership. "Gandhi's vision of an India based on equality and justice formed the foundation of our vibrant democracy," Sharma said. He also praised Shastri for his slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan" and his role in leading the nation during the 1965 war.
Concluding the event, Sharma emphasized that Gandhi's philosophy offers solutions to modern violence and conflict. The party adopted a resolution to uphold the legacies of Gandhi and Shastri to ensure a peaceful and united India.
Separately, Bhalla indicated that an alliance government would be formed in Jammu and Kashmir, as the electorate has fully supported the coalition.
