Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee kicked off a series of community Durga Puja celebrations across Kolkata and West Bengal on Wednesday, highlighting both celebration and the state's pressing issues. Banerjee addressed the recent protests that erupted following the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College.
During the inaugurations, Banerjee took a strong stand against those tarnishing Bengal's image, referring to the state as a mother figure. She condemned efforts to malign the state, emphasizing that such actions are futile. Junior doctors have staged protests demanding better safety measures in hospitals, adding to the tense climate.
Banerjee balanced her festive greetings with a reminder of the distress in flood-affected areas in the state. She noted the government's relief efforts and urged people to not forget the struggles of those in inundated regions while celebrating Durga Puja. Financial assistance to numerous clubs for organizing the events was also announced.
