Thousands of Kolkata residents marched 5 kilometers on Tuesday, demanding justice for a female medic whose rape and murder at RG Kar hospital shocked the nation. Protesters, organized by the Joint Platform of Doctors, carried placards and chanted slogans.
The procession started at College Square and ended at Rabindra Sadan, with participants emphasizing the need for women's safety and calling out rampant corruption in Bengal's healthcare system. Sayantani Mallick, a doctor among the rallyists, pledged to continue the protests during the Durga Puja festival.
Traffic congestion ensued near New Market and Esplanade as protesters rallied with lit-up mobile flashlights. The deceased postgraduate trainee was found grievously injured on August 9, triggering widespread outrage and demanding systemic change.
