Amid growing concerns over potential unrest during the Durga Puja festival, Bangladesh's interim government announced on Tuesday that it would implement all necessary measures to ensure a peaceful celebration, promising that this year's event will be the best in recent history.
The Durga Puja festival is scheduled to be celebrated across Bangladesh from October 9 to 13. Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury emphasized the government's commitment to maintaining peace, stating, "The Durga Puja celebration of this time will be the best one compared to all the previous celebrations. We will take whatever measures are required to peacefully hold the festival," according to state-run BSS news agency.
Following a law and order advisory council meeting, Chowdhury called for cooperation from all parties involved. An array of security measures, including high alert status and special units, will be deployed, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Mainul Hassan, to ensure that the festival proceeds without incident. This comes after previous unrest and demands for protection from the minority Hindu community, who faced violence and destruction of property during political upheaval after the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
