Angelina Jolie, in an exclusive with Deadline, shared her emotional journey portraying opera icon Maria Callas in director Pablo Larrain's biographical psychological drama 'Maria'. The actress called it a 'once in a lifetime' role, describing it as the most challenging of her career.

'Maria', penned by Steven Knight and produced by Fremantle, dives into Callas' life and legacy. Jolie dedicated seven months to mastering six tragic arias linked to Callas, who passed away at 53 due to a heart attack on September 16, 1977, in Paris.

Jolie expressed a deep sense of responsibility in taking on the role. She cherished the opportunity to collaborate with Larrain, something she had always aspired to. Describing the experience as a rare privilege, Jolie said it allowed her to step into the shoes of someone she deeply admired, offering her an emotional gift beyond her wildest dreams.

Reflecting on the personal impact, Jolie revealed the role changed her profoundly, offering a form of healing. She recounted the intense preparation and emotional moments on set, from initial anxieties to exhilarating performances at La Scala in Milan. These experiences, she said, left an indelible mark on her.

The film 'Maria', which reimagines Callas' final days in Paris amid her struggles with identity and legacy, premiered to an eight-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. Jolie, visibly moved by the accolade, was seen wiping away tears. The film is produced by Jonas Dornbach, Janine Jackowski, Juan de Dios Larrain, and Lorenzo Mieli.
