The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has served a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government regarding the electrocution deaths of two tribal students. The incident took place as the students were cleaning a water tank in a government-run hostel in Dhar district, on the directions of the hostel superintendent.
The NHRC, citing media reports, criticized the hostel authorities for their 'insensitive manner' and demanded accountability for the hazardous task assigned to the students, which resulted in their tragic deaths. The students reportedly came into contact with a live wire connected to a water pump inside the tank, leading to their electrocution.
The rights panel has sought a detailed report from the chief secretary and the director general of police of Madhya Pradesh within two weeks, addressing the status of the police investigation and any compensation awarded to the victims' families. The NHRC emphasized that the incident raises serious human rights concerns.
