Ten geological sites in India have been proposed to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for world heritage status and are currently under scrutiny, the government has announced.
India boasts approximately 100 geo-heritage sites, with 32 recognized as National Geological Monuments. Mines Secretary V.L. Kantha Rao emphasized that unlike archaeological sites, there is no existing legislation to protect geo-heritage sites. However, the Geo Heritage Sites and Geo-relics Bill, 2022, aims to address this and bolster the protection of India's geological heritage.
Rao highlighted the importance of recognition for India's exceptional geo-heritage sites, such as the Lunar crater in Maharashtra, while urging UNESCO to support the inclusion of some Indian sites as UNESCO Global Geoparks. These designations not only preserve geological heritage but also promote cultural connections and sustainable development, benefiting local communities.
