In war-torn Ukraine, volunteer hospital clowns don vibrant costumes and multi-colored ukuleles, transforming hospital wards filled with beeping machines into spaces of laughter and silly songs. The 'Bureau of Smiles and Support' (BUP), a clowning initiative established in 2023 by Olha Bulkina and Maryna Berdar, aims to let childhood continue amidst the unrest.
Following a crippling missile strike in July on the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital in Kyiv, BUP's role became indispensable. The clowns assisted in rubble clearance and comforted the young patients relocated to other facilities, providing vital emotional support and distraction, especially to those suffering from severe medical conditions.
Medical professionals and parents celebrate the clowns' impact, noting the volunteers' ability to shift children's focus from pain to joy. As the war strains Ukraine's healthcare system, these clowns are increasingly crucial, lifting spirits one giggle at a time.
