From Humble Beginnings to Global Phenomenon: The 20-Year Journey of parkrun

When 6,204 people took part in the 1,000th parkrun in London's Bushy Park last month, it was 6,191 more than those in the inaugural event in 2004. Similar record turnouts are expected worldwide on Oct. 5, marking parkrun's 20th birthday. This grassroots initiative has grown exponentially over two decades.

Parkrun is a free 5km run occurring every Saturday, organized entirely by volunteers. Participants receive a barcode, scanned at the finish, with results emailed later. Initially aimed at community members new to physical activity, parkrun embraces all, regardless of age or fitness.

Founded by Paul Sinton-Hewitt, parkrun has expanded to over 2,500 venues in 23 countries, becoming a powerful force for good. It now involves almost six million runners and over 900,000 volunteers, including events in GP surgeries and prisons, promoting health, happiness, and togetherness globally.
