Peñarol achieved a significant milestone by securing a spot in the Copa Libertadores semifinals after a 13-year hiatus, following a 0-0 draw against Brazil's Flamengo at home. The Uruguayan club had earlier won the first leg 1-0 via a Javier Cabrera goal.
In the semifinal, Peñarol is set to face Botafogo, which triumphed over Sao Paulo in a penalty shootout in an all-Brazilian quarterfinal encounter. Peñarol, a five-time champion, last reached this stage in 2011. Flamengo, who spent over $50 million attempting to win its fourth title, were the favorites.
The other semifinal will see Argentina's River Plate, led by Marcelo Gallardo, take on Brazil's Atletico Mineiro. The final is scheduled for Nov. 30 in Buenos Aires, the home of River Plate. Atletico Mineiro reached the semifinals by defeating defending champion Fluminense 2-0.
