Raphael Varane, the former center back for France and Real Madrid, announced his retirement on Wednesday. The 31-year-old, who recently signed with Serie A club Como, injured his knee in his sole appearance for the team.
Reflecting on his career, Varane shared on Instagram, 'In my career I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible.' He expressed immense pride in his achievements, including a standout performance in the 2018 World Cup, and contributions to Madrid's four Champions League and three Spanish league titles.
Varane joined Manchester United in 2021 but was limited to 95 appearances due to frequent injuries. After also retiring from France's national team earlier this year, he confirmed he would remain at Como in a non-playing role. Como celebrated their first Serie A victory in 21 years this week.
