The Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery (IIGJ) is set to inaugurate a new campus in Guwahati following an agreement inked on Monday.
The pact, signed between the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited (NEHHDCL) and the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), marks a significant step in skilling artisans in the region.
IIGJ's expertise will be integral to implementing the PM Vishwakarma initiative, aimed at providing specialized training and business support to local artisans and entrepreneurs, according to NEHHDC advisor Sriparna Barua.
IIGJ CEO Debashis Biswas noted that this partnership will establish a niche center offering industry-aligned training in the Northeast.
NEHHDC, under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), remains committed to promoting cultural heritage and sustainable development for artisans and weavers, a statement said.
Currently, IIGJ operates five campuses across India, offering a variety of degrees, diplomas, and professional certifications. The Guwahati campus will home in on PM Vishwakarma and other short-term courses, it was announced.
